Kinder Morgan has announced plans to develop a pipeline from Pennsylvania to Louisiana. Below is a map of the proposed project. Kinder Morgan is calling the repurposing project the Utica Marcellus Texas Pipeline Project (“UMTP”). The pipeline will primarily utilize existing pipeline. The pipeline will transport Y-grade Natural Gas Liquids (NGLs). NGLs are NOT natural gas. Although NGLs can come from natural gas, not all NGLs are derived from natural gas. Examples of Y-grade NGLs are pentane, hexane, butane and isobutane. The NGLs will come from the Utica Shale located in Pennsylvania and other states.
Kinder Morgan and/or its subsidiaries maintain easements to operate the existing pipeline and Kinder Morgan proposes to utilize the existing easements to transport the NGLs. Currently, natural gas flows through the pipeline in a northeasterly direction, but the proposed project would result in NGLs flowing in a southwestwardly direction.
Location, in Kentucky, of the existing Kinder Morgan lines:
The Y-Grade pipeline is proposed to enter Kentucky in the northeast in Greenup county. The pipeline will proceed from Greenup county and continue through the counties of Lewis, Carter, Rowan, Bath, Montgomery, Powell, Clark, Madison, Garrard, Boyle, Marion, Taylor, Green, Hart, Barren, Allen, and Simpson. Any landowners in these counties who have the pipeline on their property should feel free to contact Mr. DeMarcus to discuss the project with him.
Materials transported by the Kinder Morgan Line:
From its creation to the present, the Kinder Morgan Line that runs through Kentucky transports Natural Gas from the Gulf area to the Appalachian area for sale. The repurposed Kinder Morgan Tennessee Gas Pipeline (UMTP) would transport NGLs from Pennsylvania to the Gulf of Mexico. As stated above, NGLs are very different from natural gas. NGLs can cause explosions and contamination to water and soil. Effects of chronic exposure may result in anemia, leukemia, and nervous system damage. NGLs are odorless and colorless and are very dense, therefore accumulating in low geographical regions where they create health and explosion concerns. Unlike natural gas which is a gas, NGLs are liquids. When they are released much of the liquid turns to gas but about 20% does not and can contaminate soil and nearby waterways.

When does the Kinder Morgan Line plan to begin to transport natural gas liquids:
Kinder Morgan has expressed on several occasions that the UMTP is expected to be in service in the fourth quarter of 2018.
